Devotion

Listening to a song and meditating on its lyrics can be a great way to turn your heart and mind to God. So during this chaotic time, we are posting devotions written by students for students based on different worship songs. Today’s Devo is based on the song “Breathe” by Jonny Diaz. Click on the video below and engage with this devo as the song plays.

We live in a constantly changing, constantly moving world nowadays. The world is always telling us we need to be better and faster. The little moments that make up our lives are usually busy and chaotic. Some days I get so wrapped up in what I want to do on MY time, MY way. We become so wrapped up in our own lives that soon we forget who we are living for and that God is there. We forget that God needs to be our main focus.

I have to admit: I sometimes go days without spending any time with God. I become so engrossed in MY life and MY time that all I think about is myself. The selfishness takes over and all I can think about is getting the next thing done, checking everything off my list. I rarely ever give myself time alone with God.

Then God brought this song into my life.

The chorus hit me like a brick wall when I heard it: “Just breathe, just breathe. Come and rest at my feet. And be, just be. Chaos calls but all you really need is to just breathe.”

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own lives that we don’t give God anything. Or if we do give Him something, it’s usually the left-overs or “well, I guess I have to do this”. Do we ever just stop and think “wow God, I need you right now. Calm my senses and give me all of You. I give this time. Please let me be with You”?

In John 14:27, Jesus speaks to a crowd of people, saying, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.”

Even in the chaotic moments, God still is there to give us peace and tranquility. He goes before us, is right next to us, and is behind us all the time. It doesn’t matter where we are, who we are, or what we have done. He is right there to catch us when we fall back from tiredness and chaos. But we have to trust Him enough to do so.

Philippians 4:6-7 says: “6) Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7) And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

We need to give God our stresses and worries all to Him. None of us can handle anything in life without Him. He can handle anything and everything all at the same time. He holds the universe together. Nothing is too big or too small for Him.

If you’re stressing about anything right now, even if it’s the silliest little thing, tell your Lord and Savior. Talk to your Heavenly Father.

Next thank Him. Nothing would ever be possible if it weren’t for Him. Give God the glory and the praise He deserves. Right now give God your full self. Let yourself fall into His grace and peace, and He is there. He is protecting you; your heart, your soul, your mind, you altogether. God is your shield.

Right now, God is working in you. Stop thinking about the world. Stop thinking about your friends. Stop thinking about school, stresses, anything that you have in your head right now and breathe in God’s grace. Just be you. Relax in God’s peace. Talk to Him. Spend time with God.

Breathe. Just Breathe.
